Located south of Canmore, HWY 40 and Spray Trail provide access to an amazing vista with large or small mountain lakes located near the road

Any fishing requires a license as well as adhering to specific rules and regulations for each body of water. Please visit Alberta Guide to Sportfishing Regulations for more info.

Spray Lake

Picture
A very long and narrow lake, over 20km long and around 1km wide. Spray Lakes Reservoir runs beside Smith Dorrien Spray Trail with peaks towering over either side to make your fishing experience that much more enjoyable. Power boats are permitted and can be launched at the Driftwood Day-Use Area is on the east shore near the north end.

To Get Here: From Canmore, take Smith Dorrien Trail for 18.8km to the boat launch turnoff on your right.

Chester Lake

Picture
Another locals favorite. A great way to spend an afternoon in one of the most beautiful spots offered in Kananaskis. This area is one of the most popular hiking paths for good reason. A rock amphitheater highlighted by alpine meadows holds the lake high in the mountains.

Hiking Directions: (~3 hours - 8km - 1020' Elevation Gain) From the parking lot, follow the trail up a gradual steady incline to Chester Lake.

To Get Here: From Canmore take Spray Lakes Road (Smith Dorrien Trail) for 43.1km to the Chester Lake Parking lot on your left.

Mount Lorette Ponds

Picture
A set of two ponds, located next to the Kananaskis HWY, highlighted by the towering Mount Lorrette. These ponds are stocked with Rainbow Trout, providing a great fishing opportunity next to the road.

To Get Here: From HWY 1, take HWY 40south for 18km to Mount Lorrette Ponds on your left.

Kananaskis River

Picture
A beautiful active river with easy access. Unfortunately the access combined with fluctuating dam flows, have prevented this river from becoming a good fish habitat. However, fishing Pocaterra creek may provide more success. You'll find Cutthroat, Rainbow, Bull and Brook Trout as well as Mountain Whitefish.

To Get Here: From HWY 1, take HWY 40 South. You will find access to Kananaskis River  all the way from Canoe Meadows to Lower Kananaskis Lake, as the highway follows the river.
