Highwood Area Picnic Sites

HWY 532

Picture
Highway to the stars. From the foothills surrounding Chain Lakes, wind your way up a dirt road as it slowly narrows and climbs through a mountain pass into subalpine meadows. As you climb through the pass, take a moment to walk up on the small ridge on the south side of the road and enjoy a million dollar prairie foothill view! Although a four wheel drive isn't normally required, this road can be fairly rough.

To Get Here: From Longview, take HWY 22 south for 28km to HWY 532 on your right. HWY 532 runs for 26km up over a mountain pass before connecting with HWY 40.

Bear Pond

Picture
A beautiful mountain lake that feels like it's on the edge of the world. A surreal area that is on the border of alpine mountain ranges with the vast rolling foothills falling to the prairie flatland behind.

From the Parking lot, scramble up a short but steep trail for 0.4km to Bear Pond

To Get Here: From Longview, take HWY 22 south for 28km to HWY 532. Follow HWY 532 west for 19km to Bear Pond parking lot on your right.

Sentinel

Picture
A picnic spot where you can drive right to the edge of the Highwood River. Large rocks on the shore provide the perfect lounging spot as you watch the river power by.

To Get Here: From Longview take HWY 541 for 38km west from HWY 22 at Longview. The parking area will be on the left hand side.
