Highwood Pass - Longview to HWY1 (Kananaskis's Rooftop Highway)

Highwood Pass is the setting for the Granfrondo Race for a reason. It covers every landscape from prairie to the highest mountain pass in the Canadian Rockies along with a heart pumping workout. This highway is littered with stunning peaks and majestic wildlife. Upper Kananaskis Lake is around the halfway point, providing an amazing vista to stop and rest your legs. This route is closed from Dec 1 - June 15 between Hwy 40 and Highwood Junction. However, you can often ride this section void of cars from late May onward. Make sure you know the conditions or make plans to turn around as there can be heavy snowfalls throughout June. Also watch for snowplows and avalanche paths. Avalanches can pose a serious hazard in late spring.

148KM One Way
A - Start at Longview, Alberta (Be sure to get some famous Beef Jerky for the ride from Longview).
B - 43.5km Here you'll find a store and a pay phone to call someone if you suddenly realize that this is really going to hurt
(Road closed at this point from Dec 1 - June 15 but you can often pass the gate in late spring, snow permitting)
C - 81.2km Breath a sigh of relief as you top out on Highwood Pass at 2206m/7238ft
D - 98.2km Arrive at the heart of Kananaskis. A short detour provides a view of Kananaskis Lakes, an ideal rest stop
E - 125.1km Pass Nakiska Ski Resort
F - 148km Arrive at Stoney Nakoda Casino. If you made it, luck is on your side and there are slots nearby
