Ghost Fishing Areas

Local fishing spots are located throughout Bragg Creek & Kananaskis area. We've listed the popular ones here. There may be some more hidden bodies of water concealing the big one but it wouldn't be as rewarding if we told you where to go.

Any fishing requires a license as well as adhering to specific rules and regulations for each body of water. Please visit Alberta Guide to Sportfishing Regulations for more info.

Ghost River

Picture
The Ghost River may not provide the best fishing but it certainly provides one of the most jaw dropping rock amphitheater's out there. Rainbow, Cutthroat, Bull and Brook Trout, as well as Mountain Whitefish can all be found here. This is a wild remote area that demands respect. There is no cell phone coverage and you can often spend an entire day without seeing anyone. Once you enter the gravel plains beware of flash flooding. It's not uncommon to have a small stream rise significantly for no apparent reason. Just one of the many mysteries of the Ghost! The Ghost is a back door entrance to Banff and Lake Minnewanka area.

To Get Here: Take HWY 40 (Forestry Trunk Road) north from HWY 1A, just east of Ghost Lake. Continue for 21.4km until Richards Road joins HWY 40. Continue North on HWY 40 for another 200m to a dirt road on your left. Cross a cattle guard and pass a sign board on your right. Continue for another 16km sticking to the main road, until you come to the "Big Hill". This hill is loose, so unless you have a four wheel drive or you want to chance not getting back up, this is the end of the road. At the bottom of the hill you can gain access to the river at several locations in the gravel plains. There are a few bridges and other access points that can be found on the route out to the ghost if you keep your eyes peeled.

Waiparous Creek

Picture
A small creek near numerous campsites on the Forestry Trunk Road. Rumored to be one of the best Cutthroat Trout streams near Calgary. Good fishing is often found further north towards Burn Timber and Fallen Timber Creeks but there is easy access throughout, as the Forestry Trunk Road follows the creek bed with roads shooting off either side. Brook, Cutthroat, and Bull Trout, as well as Mountain Whitefish can be found here.

To Get Here: Take HWY 1a to HWY 40 (Forestry Trunk Road). Follow the Forestry Trunk Road for 34km north until the road is close enough to access Waiparous Creek.
